5 typical village resorts for families

Skiing with family, arguably best in a resort with a village atmosphere, is a wonderful holiday experience, away from the routine of everyday life. We’ve handpicked five authentic, peaceful spots where it’s great to take the children.

Le Grand-Bornand

“The unspoilt charm of a mountain village”. Head to Savoie Mont-Blanc, to the centre of the Aravis Massif and the resort of Le Grand-Bornand (External link) . We love this village for its square, its typical church, its local shops and its 400-year-old cottages. And the backdrop? The Aravis mountain range, overhung at 2,750m by the wooded summit of the Massif de la Pointe Percée. When you’re skiing with family, push yourselves to climb six kilometres higher to 1,300m, where 86km of trails await you. Children can learn the basics at the newly developed Plateau du Rosay, at the heart of the resort.

Here, the mountain is king. Both sporty and family-friendly, Pralognan-la-Vanoise (External link) combines unspoilt nature with vintage charm. Above all, we love this village for its quiet soul. Located in Savoie Mont-Blanc, at the end of a valley and between 1,410 and 2,130m above sea level, the area has 26km of slopes, accessible to all. Among the fir trees, it’s not unusual to encounter chamois, the mascots of the resort. Perfectly suited to please young and old alike, ski and après-ski activities are numerous here.

Carrying the 'Famille Plus Montagne' label, the resort of Les Gets (External link) is ideally situated in the heart of the immense Portes du Soleil (External link) ski area, and directly accessible from Morzine-Avoriaz (External link) by skiing through the fir trees and across mountain pastures. At Ranfoilly, enjoy the superb views of the Mont Blanc mountain chain - there's a free photo spot to capture your fondest family memories. Little ones can have fun in the Grand Cry area and on the Mauve piste, while older kids can go wild with the Boarder-Cross, Slalom and Snowpark.

Villard de Lans and Corrençon en Vercors

In the Vercors massif, a beautiful natural environment for winter family holidays, the Villard-Corrençon area (External link) covers 125 km of downhill skiing and 153 km of Nordic slopes around the picturesque farming villages of Villard-de-Lans and Corrençon-en-Vercors. The Nordic site of Haut Vercors is exceptional and the choice of terrain is vast, from cross-country skiing and snowshoeing to marked footpaths. The Nordic Park (External link) offers children's workshops for a fun introduction to Nordic skiing and biathlons in Isère.

Le Lac Blanc

Nestled at the heart of the Ballon des Vosges in Haut-Rhin, on the Alsace wine route, the resort of Le Lac Blanc (External link) inspires snowy adventures and a lot more besides. There are 67km of cross-country ski trails, 14km of downhill ski runs, and hiking and freestyle trails for youngsters – but above all, a friendly atmosphere and well-groomed slopes. All in a truly breathtaking natural environment. Ski during the day and, come nightfall, settle into a typical gites and enjoy cheese, charcuterie and wines of Alsace –all from the Kaysersberg Valley.

Your safety and wellbeing are our top priorities

All staff in the French mountains are doing their utmost to ensure you experience an unrestricted and hassle-free holiday, and are at your disposal from the very first steps of your booking.

National certification procedures and local charters attesting to the implementation of health measures are being developed, in which tourism stakeholders are involved. Avoriaz was the first resort to obtain the ‘Safeguard’ label, which guarantees that all hygiene and prevention protocols are implemented at resort level as part of the fight against Covid-19. The Dévoluy and Puy-St-Vincent ski areas have the AFNOR ‘Verification of health measures Covid-19’ label. The Jura Mountains are committed to the ‘Covid Free’ label. The resorts of Haute-Maurienne Vanoise, Val d’Arly Mont-Blanc and Les Deux Alpes have united their service providers around a local charter.
