Imagine a world made of only oranges and lemons! In the warmest town of the French Riviera, a unique event involving 140 tonnes of citrus fruits is where your imagination comes alive! Celebrating its 87th year, the Menton Lemon Festival or Fête du Citron will take place from 15th February to 3rd March 2020.
Every year, the little town of Menton on the edge of the Côte d'Azur, celebrates one of France's most popular events. This festival is meant to mark the farewell of winter and to welcome the arrival of spring. And what could be more vernal than this colourful celebration of life? It is said that even Queen Victoria attended this event back in 1882. Now, the festival attracts over 200,000 visitors every year!
For three weeks every winter, Menton's streets are filled with a delightful citrus aroma. This year's theme celebrates "Fêtes du Monde” (Festivals from around the World).
The oranges and lemons are strapped to a base frame with elastic bands looped between chicken wires and the fruit. The fruits are then sold off at a bargain price once the festival is over. There are 750,000+ elastic bands used for attaching the fruits. Impressive right?
Visit the Biovès Gardens to see some ephemeral, giant sculptures and attend the lively parade on Sundays (16th, 23rd February and 1st March 2020). There are also night time parades that will have you dancing to the tunes of brass bands, orchestras, and folk groups! At night, the citrus fruit patterns light up and create a magical, enchanting visual.
Come discover this fantasy world, and end the night with a huge party, fireworks, and street dancing- all of which will leave you awestruck. This is indeed, a vitamin-C enriched event.
