Médoc Marathon: Aquitaine

9 September

Would you run a marathon that?

• Rewarded you with a bottle of wine equivalent to your body weight
• Descend on Bordeaux vineyards to quaff wines from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Lynch-Bages, Pichon Lonqueville, and Beychevelles among others.

• Allowed you to participate wearing the fanciest costume you own – a honeybee or a smurf- no judgements made

If your answer to all of the above is a yes, then gear up to stimulate your palate as well as your hamstrings for the Marathon des Châteaux du Medoc - every wine aficionado's dream race! You run through the beautiful vineyards and the stunningly beautiful châteaux of Bordeaux simultaneously quaffing world-class wines, giving a whole new meaning to hydration. You replace energy bars with gourmet delicacies such as oysters, moules frites, foie gras, cheese, steak and Îles flottantes (A floating island dessert). Marathon du Medoc is also nicknamed The Longest Marathon in the World, and by that we mean it's the slowest. (And no, we aren't complaining.) After all, with a cut-off time of 6hrs 30 minutes, it is necessary to take a few stops along the course...even if those stops involve tasting some fine wines.

The party starts well before the race begins though. In the days leading up to the marathon, the small town of Pauillac on the banks of the Gironde River becomes the race headquarters. Your opportunity for some carbohydrate intake a night before the marathon is here at the 'Milles Pâtes' pasta party.

Then, the next morning, begin your marathon and finish it at a leisurely, hiccupping pace. Admire the effort put into each runner's costume, (this year's theme being "Music in 33 RMP Record") and end the run with a big grin on your face, for there are surprise gifts waiting at the finish line for every participant.
