Rendez-vous in Orne
Halfway from Mont Saint Michel, the Normandy landing beaches and the Loire Valley, away from mass tourism, discover the elegance of timeless and authentic Normandy.
Welcome to Orne, which perfectly combines the wild beauty of our countryside, the charm of our exceptional cities of character, our local products, and the talent of our craftsmen.
From the medieval city of Domfront and the final stage of the Battle of Normandy in Montormel (Chambois-falaise pocket), to Carrouges Castle and the manors of Le Perche, Orne has survived the centuries, preserving its rich history. Orne’s emblem is the horse and it has its own '”Versailles” at Le Haras National du Pin. The Stud will delight architecture and equestrian lovers alike. In Alencon, needle-lace is in the spotlight especially since it has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Orne also has an artistic side, whether they are painters like Courbet, Corot or Saïn in Saint Céneri Gérei, or philosophers like Alain in Mortagne au Perche, or writers like the Comtesse de Segur in Aube. Orne is truly a land of inspiration.
Crossed by the Normandie Maine and the Perche Regional Nature Parks, Orne is a vast playground for nature lovers. Swiss Normandy and its famous site of La Roche d’Oëtre, the Mancelles Alps, and the beautiful Perche, Andaines or Ecouves forests, offer real spots for hiking, biking or horse riding. Families will be able to enjoy either of the two greenways (Alençon / Condé-sur-Huisne or Flers / Domfront), which are secure hiking trails. After all that physical activity, treat yourself in Bagnoles de l'Orne, temple of fitness, a real haven of well-being.
The year in Orne is punctuated by events across the department. Le Septembre Musical de l'Orne, an unforgettable event for music lovers, is the highlight of the cultural season, in which there are numerous music festivals (Spring Song, Around a Piano Festival, Sonic Arts Festival...). During the summer, thousands of visitors come to Carrouges Castle’s park, to attend the Hunting and Fishing Festival. Horse enthusiasts meet up at Les Jeudis du Pin (a musical presentation of stallions of the Haras du Pin), or at the many horse races held at one of the regional racetracks. A few weeks before Christmas, the Bocage villages are adorned with thousands of colors for the contest of the best illuminated towns and villages, allowing visitors to experience a true symphony of lights.
Camembert, apple juice, cider, perry, black pudding from Mortagne-au-Perche… Orne indead sounds like an invitation to gluttony. During the French Revolution, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge, Marie Harel developed the recipe for what would become one of the most famous cheeses in the world: Le Camembert. Around the village of Camembert, and amongst the apple trees, one is reminded that Orne is the birthplace of AOC (Protected Appellation of Origin) cider, calvados and pommel. The Perry (pear cider), is considered as the Norman champagne, and the Domfrontais region is its only AOC territory in France.
